The Graduate Program of Universitas Ngurah Rai (UNR) hosted an international workshop titled “Navigating the Global Research Landscape: Strategies for High-Impact Publication and Academic Advancement” at the UNR Campus in Denpasar on Saturday, August 9, 2025.
The event brought together around 50 participants primarily lecturers and postgraduate students aiming to sharpen their skills in publishing research in reputable international journals.
Held in International Class F2.3, the workshop featured keynote speaker Prof. Dr. Zaheer Anwer, Associate Professor in the Department of Accounting, Finance, and Economics and Deputy Dean (Internationalization) at Sunway Business School, Malaysia.
A globally recognized researcher, Prof. Zaheer shared insights on strategies for achieving high-impact publications, covering the entire process from topic selection and research design to navigating the publication pipeline.
Dr. Nyoman Diah Utari Dewi, A.Par, MAP, Director of Postgraduate Studies at UNR, explained that the workshop is part of UNR’s push for research internationalization particularly for the newly established Master of Innovation Management (MMI) program.
“This is MMI’s inaugural year, and we immediately invited Prof. Zaheer from Sunway University. The workshop covered everything from choosing a theme to writing and publishing research,” said Diah Utari.
UNR has maintained a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Sunway University since last year, fostering collaboration between the MMI program and Sunway Business School. The university has also organized similar events with international speakers such as Prof. Catherine from partner institutions.
During his presentation, Prof. Zaheer stressed that publishing in top-tier journals requires a deliberate and well-structured approach.
“This is not an easy journey. You must understand the research process, select a compelling topic, identify a broad audience, and ensure your findings are valuable to academia, industry, and government,” he noted.
He also highlighted common challenges in global publishing such as limited mentorship, funding constraints, the scarcity of reputable journals, and language barriers. To address these, he advocated for cross-border collaboration and leveraging complementary expertise.
“If Indonesia excels in quantitative methods, partner with researchers who are strong writers. Collaboration can bridge skill gaps,” he advised.
Prof. Zaheer also suggested forward-looking research topics, including FinTech, cryptocurrency, the impact of U.S. trade tariffs on ASEAN exports, and the economic consequences of war.
The workshop is expected to serve as a catalyst for boosting international research output among UNR lecturers and students, aligning with the university’s vision of strengthening its global academic footprint. BWN-03
